During 20 years as the frontline in the war against American invaders, Vinh Linh people dug more than 100 tunnels. They lived, worked, studied, produced and fought right in the underground.
More than 40 years ago, former female militia in Vinh Linh (Quang Tri) and 200 militants were directly dug Vinh Moc Tunnels. At that time, they used dim light from oil lamps and dug with picks and shovels. There are three tunnel layers, the deepest place of 23 meters and have all functions as works on the ground. 94 family apartments have been dug with area of 2 square meters used for 4 people.
Ms. Tran Thi Cong, a former militia in Vinh Linh (Quang Tri) remembers: “our apartment has four people, a small bed to take a rest after fighting, if not enough space, we covered the floor with mat.”
In the heart of tunnels, the harsh life made everyone must be disciplined. Well water was modestly used and always kept dry, cooking right in underground without smoke to avoid being detected by the enemy. Only when really needed did people turn oil lamps. However, innocence, optimistic spirit, and victory belief were always in their minds. Young children learnt, youth danced, staffs took part in meetings, militias prepared for the big battle. And while on the ground, America enemy- the South Vietnam government determined to turn Vinh Linh into a white area and a dead zone. Under tunnels, living germs still developed in the earth. Maternity homes witnessed 17 babies.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan, a former militia of Vinh Linh (Quang Tri): “there is no elsewhere as this land, how heroic they are. Under rain of bomb, still keep moving forward, etc.”
