An old story says, once upon a time, in the winter, when the old rice went out and the new rice was not ready to be harvested, the farmer lacked rice seriously, the God blessed them by making the buckwheat grow from the germs of rice and corn, the plant grew up much faster than rice and corn and became a source of food for the people, successfully saved them until the harvest came.

Today farmers in Ha Giang usually start to plant the buckwheat after harvesting rice, around in September, they grow very fast and can be ready for harvesting at the end of November.
