The swallow tail boat racing festival Muong Lay Town is held on the first day of the New Year in Son La hydropower reservoir, the center of town in order to preserve and promote the cultural values of a swallow tail boat racing of White Thai people in Muong Lay.
From early morning, there are a lot of people in the province and other provinces like Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Lao Cai and tourists coming and eager to watch.
Son La hydropower reservoir with an area of 50 square kilometers wide is a place where the race takes place. Numerous visitors are crowded around the bridge to follow the race.
The boat racing festival involves 9 male teams, with the number of athletes up to 200 people.
