Look at this picture, let’s image how you cross this road?
If you are planning to travel to Vietnam, then knowing about transportation in Vietnam is a necessary thing to consider. Not known for modern conveniences, Vietnam actually has a variety of transportation methods. Transportation in Vietnam is rather hassle-free. Motorbikes remain the most popular means of transportation in Vietnam, which has a population of around 92 million people and 45 million registered motorbikes, according to the Ministry of Transport. You can imagine with this number of transportations, how the transportaion it will be?
We have accumulated some helpful tips to help you safely (or as safe as possible) cross the streets in the city.
1. First up, remain calm and look both ways and take your first step. Remember that traffic in Vietnam drives on the right-hand side of the road.
2. Put your arm in the air. It makes you more visible to traffic and is an added precaution.
3. Remain at a slow and steady pace. It is very important you do not change your pace, stop, turn around, back up or change course. The traffic around you is like a flowing river and is anticipating your next move. Make sure your next move it predictable!
Extra Crossing the Street Tips: Keep slow and steady pace.
4. Go in group
Groups should cross in a line – shoulder to shoulder rather than single file (one behind the other). You want to take up the least amount of space for the traffic, flowing around you. When you can see that the road is relatively bike/car/scooter-free, step out. Don’t be alarmed if the bikes/cars/scooters driving towards you don’t appear to be slowing down; like sands through the hourglass, they’ll move around you (though they may also honk wildly at you too).
5. Enlist the help of a local. Vietnamese people are very friendly and most are more than happy to help you cross the road.
Believe me, if you follow these tips, it will be as if you have some super power invisashield around you.
What is your trick? Do you follow these same steps or do you have some different advice to add?
